By connecting to the real world of students’ lives, authentic learning enables students to become lifelong learners who contribute to society and the wider world as active and discerning citizens. Authentic learning is central to our work as Catholic educators because it promotes the continual growth and wellbeing of the whole person — spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.
Mary MacKillop Catholic College offers a stimulating and varied educational experience where girls can realise their full potential as young women. We have a proud history of academic excellence which is achieved via a broad curriculum. This includes the mandatory courses for Years 7–10, as well as a wide variety of electives in technology, creative and performing arts, humanities and languages. A growth mindset where both students and teachers believe that ability and achievement can change as a result of effort and perseverance, a commitment to study and collaboration are central to our sustained success in the Higher School Certificate. Senior students can select from a wide range of 2 Unit courses across all Key Learning Areas as well as Extension courses, Vocational courses, Board Endorsed courses and Trade Training Centre courses, catering to the diverse learning needs of our students.
We recognise that gifted learners are best placed academically, socially, and emotionally when they are with like-ability peers for a significant proportion of their time at school. The Newman Selective Gifted Education Program enables us to cater for the educational, social and emotional needs of our gifted and talented students. Selective classes in Years 7 to 10 also provide opportunities to enrich and challenge our most able students. Learning meets the needs of all students, thus we also provide for those who need additional learning support. The college delivers targeted programs to improve literacy, numeracy and language needs of our students.
Nurturing personal excellence, knowing each learner fully and setting high expectations are central to our teaching and learning. Resources, facilities and innovative learning spaces facilitate transformational thinking, discovery and innovation and enhance 21st century skills of collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication.
